  Took over payroll for a logistics company right as we expanded into a fourth state. The checklist that would've saved me a bad week:

  • Register for withholding and unemployment insurance before the first payroll, not after
  • Check local taxes too — some states have city or county-level withholding on top of state
  • Confirm your payroll system actually supports the new state before you need it to
  • Set a calendar reminder for that state's filing deadlines — rarely the same as your home state
